Turn of the century Paris, the Studio Angèle. The Tsar has just confirmed an appointment that Angele, the owner, knows nothing about. Suddenly, five anarchist assassins appear, planning to impersonate her and kill the Tsar...

Filled with Weill’s distinctive music and absurd characters, The Tsar Wants His Photograph Taken revives this long-neglected comedy by using the latest research by UCL’s Michael Berkowitz into the period’s photography, which was dominated by cosmopolitan Jews – leading to the once-popular work’s suppression by the Nazis. Performed in a translation by Lys Symonette.
