Created for those with an interest in identification and conservation of the United Kingdom’s moths and butterflies and other invertebrates, this course is designed for both complete beginners and more experienced learners. Tutored by our entomology expert you will learn about the history and habitats of our indigenous species and how to recognise the major families and where to find various types of invertebrates in the field. Loss of habitat is an enormous concern and, thus, understanding and promoting opportunities for conservation as well as basic field study and recording techniques will also be hot topics on this course.

The morning will start out in the New River Studio where you will be participate in activities and live presentations to assist in recognising and identifying and classifying species. Your tutor will also cover natural history of species, lifecycle, habitat, migration, camouflage & survival methods against predators and conditions and conservation.

During the afternoon, you will explore the reserve practising the best ways to study your subjects and develop the skills needed to enjoy watching and recording. You will be taught practical methods of conservation and recording and participate in demonstrations of various field techniques including setting moth traps. Participants may even find an as yet undiscovered species! At the close of the course, there will be an overview of the day and you will practice registering your sightings online. Those students who wish to further their skills will receive guidance about how further education and training to suit their interests may be pursued.
