For our spring concert we’re thrilled to welcome, as guest conductor, the Royal Air Force’s distinguished Principal Director of Music Duncan Stubbs. He will be presenting a very exciting and varied programme, beginning with the Hamlet Fantasy Overture by Tchaikovsky. Dedicated to Grieg, the essence of the work is the brooding atmosphere depicting Elsinore, the setting of Shakespeare’s play.

Next, we hear the RAF’s talented principal tuba player Jonathan Gawn performing the Tuba Concerto by Vaughan Williams. The great British composer liked the instrument and often included parts for it in his orchestral works, and in this concerto it takes centre stage and proves that it can hold its own as a solo instrument.
The final work in this concert will be the supremely popular Symphonie Fantastique by Berlioz. Using a large orchestra, this extraordinary piece of music consists of a series of depictions of the opium-induced visions experienced by a love-lorn young poet, and includes the chilling and doom-laden ‘March to the Scaffold’.
Join us for a free pre-concert talk at 7pm.
