Wotever DIY Film Fest – QTIPOC Short Films + Panel
Friday 17 June 2016, 19:30

Screening the best Black Queer DIY Shorts

Wotever DIY Film Festival is a celebration of DIY queer film, proving that you don't need mega-bucks to create cracking films. WDIYFF has been running for five years in South East London and is excited to cross the river to Bernie Grant Arts Centre to show our favourite QTIPOC (Queer, Trans, Intersex People of Colour) films from our previous festivals. Expect a real diversity of film that encompasses music, romance and politics. Seeing our lives reflected on screen is always powerful and this event reaches out to queer black people tired of not seeing themselves on screen their allies. We will follow our screening with a QTIPOC panel for a fiery debate about queer black film and representation, present and future.

Programme list:
FU377
Dir. Neelu Bhuman, UK, 2014 5min
When Section 377, a British colonial law outlawing ‘unnatural offences’ was in turn declared unconstitutional only for the decision to be overturned 4 years later, outrage and shock was felt throughout India and worldwide. FU377 focuses on a relationship between a mum using her ‘mint condition’ knowledge of lesbian sex to try and cheer up her heartbroken queer daughter as the Supreme Court makes their final ruling. This is a sweet, funny and affecting film that speaks out its politics loud and clear.

Virginade (Virginity)
Dir Chico Lacerda, Brazil 2015 15min
A young man describes his journey of sexual awakening with a compelling mixture of eroticism, naivete and yearning. This is juxtaposted with a series of shots from everyday Brazilian life – until we are treated to visual treat of something quite unexpected! This film was from our Latin American Voices programme from our 2015 festival.

Keep it Moving
Dir Consuelo Ramirez, US, 2009, 9min
This was originally shown at Wotever DIY Film Festival in 2013.
