On Thursday 28th July 2016 between 8 and 9pm, Roger Goula will perform music from his limited edition EP 'Something About Silence' (featuring remixes by Christian Löffler and Phaeleh) and his forthcoming album 'Overview Effect', which is the debut release from Cognitive Shift Recordings, a new collaboration between One Little Indian and Manners McDade Publishing. The event is being promoted and managed by London concert producers Chaos Theory.

On 29 July, contemporary classical composer and producer Roger Goula will release a limited vinyl edition of his EP 'Something About Silence', in the run-up to the release of his full debut album towards the end of the year via Cognitive Shift Recordings.

'Overview Effect' will be the first album released from both Roger Goula and Cognitive Shift Recordings. The album encapsulates the ethos of the new label, bridging the gap between modern classical and electronic music, creating a cohesive work that is both entirely of the moment yet timeless. The record’s stunning classical string instrumentation is performed by the illustrious quartet of Thomas Gould, Peter Gregson, Lucy Railton and Stephen Upshaw.

Roger Goula is a London based composer and multi-instrumentalist. Coming from a contemporary classical background, and building on his involvement in the free improvisation scene in London in the mid 2000s, Goula’s work has developed into an experimental blend of classical chamber and orchestral music with electronics.

Inspired by renaissance and baroque music (Monteverdi, Bach, Vivaldi), as well as by minimalism (Reich, Glass, Part), and looking at the language of electronic music (Aphex Twin, Autechre), his compositions perform complexity through repetition of minimal elements and emotional transporting textures.

Cognitive Shift Recordings is born out of a collaboration between One Little Indian Records, home to artists including Björk and Samaris, and Manners McDade Music Publishing, home to artists such as Nils Frahm, Poppy Ackroyd and Throwing Snow. Cognitive Shift Recordings creates a new home for contemporary classical music that has influences and instrumentation within the genre and beyond.

When Roger was approached by Bob McDade to create the label’s first album, he presented the concept of the “Overview Effect”. This is a psychological phenomenon experienced by astronauts when viewing Earth from a distance, allowing them to see the entire planet surrounded by the endless black void of space. This can cause a cognitive shift in the minds of the astronauts, giving them a completely new perspective on life, Earth and humanity. Around this concept, the album and label formed, with the aim of recreating this psychological shift through the power of sound and music.

The album is due to be released at the end of the year, preceded by the release of limited edition vinyl Something About Silence on 29 July, featuring two original tracks and two accompanying remixes by Christian Löffler and Phaeleh.
