Alfred Hitchcock’s early silent thriller The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1927) has many of the themes the famous English director would build on throughout his career: suspense, psychological intensity, claustrophobia, fetishism, sexuality and death. The plot has a serial killer known as The Avenger, clearly in the mould of Jack the Ripper, murdering blonde women on the foggy nighttime streets of London. While this is happening, a mysterious man (played by Ivor Novello) arrives at the house of Mr and Mrs bunting looking for a room to rent. Is he The Avenger?

It will be projected onto a big screen in the atmospheric, candlelit surroundings of St John's Church, Notting Hill, accompanied by the church's recently restored organ. This organ, now in excellent condition and one of the best examples in London, provides a reverberating wall of sound, filling the church all around you. This will be played by Donald MacKenzie, silent-film accompanist expert and resident organist at the Odeon Leicester Square. This is the 6th film he has accompanied at St John's Notting Hill, all previous of which have sold out. Get your ticket in advance and come along for a rare showing of this classic silent film.
