Sound of Forms
Republic Gallery, 15.09 - 27.09
Private View 15 September 19.00-22.00

The exhibition comprises of ‘Poetry Drawings’ - an ongoing series of works on paper, translucent cotton, silk, plastic, stones, and revitalised books. This cycle reflects on the written word as symbol, which is also live graphic score to be spoken, sung, uttered by artist or audience.

In the installation at the Republic Gallery objects step out into the space, creating a labyrinthian, with larger translucent screens suspended and smaller artworks occupying surfaces and meander throughout the space, forming a landscape.

The show is formed of older works, primarily those ones created during the residency at the Crypt Gallery, and new works which are inspired by the location of the gallery, the history and the landscape of East India Docks. Visual poetry finds voice through a series of recordings and a set of performances taking place during the show.

About Evgenia

Evgenia Emets is a poet and artist. Sound, word, poetry, drawing are the primary elements of her current work. Through installations and performances Evgenia creates experiences, which invite the audience to question the boundaries of perception. Her visual artworks are most often created in a contemplative manner, to invite self-reflection.

Evgenia’s sonic explorations are focused on working with voice as the primary tool. It is always accessible, always available to us – to reclaim voice as means of communicating beyond language, through more abstracted sound. A specific element of Evgenia’s work is audience participation. In some of her performances she challenges perception of humans as separate from each other, inviting her audience to become participants – into an immersive and often ritualistic space.
Evgenia was born in 1979 in Poltava (Ukraine, USSR) and is based in London. She graduated with an MA in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins College of Art, London in 2008. She is also Artistic Director and founder of the Analema Group, which emerged in 2010 for the purpose of art collaborations.
