The Battle of Hastings: 950th Anniversary

Dr Matthew Bennett will talk about one of the most famous dates in English history - 14 October 1066.

On this day, William Duke of Normandy, leading an army of his own subjects, along with many allies and mercenaries, attacked uphill and all day long, until the defending king, Harold Godwinesson, was killed and his forces overpowered.

This was only the beginning of a six-year conquest that led to profound changes in the way that England was governed, the law and even the language spoken by the ruling class - French.

The talk will cover the background to the campaign and the nature of the seaborne invasion. However, the main focus will be on the terrain, troop types and tactics of the battle itself.

Dr Matthew Bennett is a military historian specialising in medieval warfare who taught at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst for 30 years. He has published widely on the subject including 'The Campaigns of the Norman Conquest' (Osprey, 2001).
