What better way to start your Christmas night out this season than with award-winning drinks writers and comedy performers Ben McFarland and Tom Sandham, aka The Thinking Drinkers, who bring their sell-out Edinburgh Fringe show Around the World in 80 Drinks to the capital’s Museum of Comedy for a month’s run!

Armed with a cabinet of drinks and a compendium of alcoholic anecdotes, the Thinking Drinkers embark on an enlightening, intoxicating and elbow-bending expedition of the world in its cups. From African tribes that like to tie one on, to the whisky worshiping Japanese, via hooch-soaked Hindus and liquor-loving American gangsters (and maybe, if we really have to, a Frenchman), the Thinking Drinkers explore alternative attitudes to alcohol as they prepare you for your festive season of discerning drinking. This is a unique and hilarious hour of laughter, learning and lovely free liquor. It’s funny, it’s fascinating and you get free drinks.

Having met several years ago whilst working on a leading pub magazine, Ben and Tom left for America where they co-wrote the award-winning Good Beer Guide West Coast USA. They are currently drinks columnists for the Daily Telegraph, METRO and Spectator and have contributed to an array of international publications including the Esquire, Shortlist, The Times, The Guardian, Time Out London, Conde Nast Traveller, Imbibe Magazine and The Independent. They both regularly appear on television and radio as leading drinks experts and have guested on Sunday Brunch (Channel 4), Simon Mayo (BBC Radio 2), Jamie Oliver’s Drinks Tube and a variety of regional BBC radio shows.

Following sell-out shows and excellent reviews of their debut Fringe show, The Thinking Drinker’s Guide to Alcohol, they went on to perform at London’s prestigious Soho Theatre, the Cheltenham Literature Festival and Taste of London. In 2014, their follow-up The Thinking Drinker’s Guide to the Legends of Liquor enjoyed another sell-out run at the Edinburgh Festival and Soho Theatre, earning four and five star reviews before touring nationwide, and inspired an award-winning book, The Thinking Drinkers: An Enlightened Imbibers Guide to Alcohol.

Ben McFarland is the triple-crowned winner of British Beer Writer of the Year – the first as the youngest ever recipient. He is also the author of World’s Best Beers: 1000 Unmissable Brews from Portland to Prague and Boutique Beer: 500 of the World’s Finest Craft Brews.

Tom Sandham is former editor of leading industry spirits and cocktail magazine CLASS and lectures on spirits for the Wine & Spirits Education Trust. He launched The World’s 50 Best Bars and House Tonic magazine for the Soho House Group, and is also the author of the award-winning World’s Best Cocktails.
