Janet Lance Hughes’ exhibition at Kings Place Gallery celebrates the arrival of The University of The Arts, Central Saint Martins to the Granary Building at Kings Cross.

A former Senior Lecturer at Central Saint Martins, Janet has painted portraits of St Martin’s alumni along with ex-students and staff from Central School of Art and more recently Central Saint Martins, Drama Centre London and Byam Shaw School of Art, who joined CSM in 1999 and 2003 respectively.

Janet’s subjects are contemporaries at large in the world of British arts and industry who include among others: Glen Matlock; Gareth Pugh; Giles Deacon; Matthew Williamson; Sir Terence and Sebastian Conran; Sir James Dyson (alumnus of Byam Shaw School of Art ); Colin Firth OBE; Simon Callow CBE; Geraldine James (Alumnus of Drama Centre London); Theo Fennell; Stephen Jones; Dylan Jones; Drusilla Beyfus; Sarah Mower; Hussein Chalayan MBE and Sir Anthony Caro.

It was during a teaching session that the idea for this project emerged, “I started to imagine all the extraordinary people who had been through the doors in the last 50 or so years. I started to think how our contemporary culture has been significantly shaped by the various people involved in education and training in that environment, and what an interesting idea it might be to paint some of them.”

Janet studied at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art at Oxford, followed by Manchester Polytechnic where she was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. Janet ran her own fashion label for 10 years whilst teaching at CSM. She is now creative Consultant at Aquascutum.

Proceeds from the sale of work will go towards Student Support and Cancer Research, Janet’s chosen charity.
