Dog Blog – Hollyhocks tree house café with Richmond river views

Dogs in London - The London Dog Blog

Dog walkers will know the joys of walking along the riverside at Richmond – whether you go for the busy town centre vibe or stroll along to the quieter, grassy banks near Petersham. After sitting in the sunshine there, drinking in the sight of boats puttering along and geese and ducks moving lazily out of their way, we went in search of refreshment.

And it was here that we discovered a lovely little café – Hollyhocks – which is at the top of steep bank of grass, bordered with beautiful flower beds – with views down to the bend in the river. There’s also statues, huge trees and lots of space to run around.

You access Terrace Gardens (which combines three old estates) by walking from the riverside Buccleuch Gardens under the Petersham Road through a quaint old stone tunnel and up some steep steps. Hollyhocks Café is a little gem. Inside it’s cosy and quirky – with elevated Japanese parasols which have fairy lights entwined around the handle, an eclectic selection of sofas and cane furniture with table tops scattered with newspapers like you might find at home. And a tiny serving area which is jam packed with all sorts of delicious treats – wholesome vegetarian bakes, exotic salads and handsome home baked cakes. We indulged with a pot of Fairtrade tea, huge cups of smooth, rich coffee and plump scones complete with clotted cream and jam. Alfie was in his element.

Outside there is a large covered wraparound terrace with lots and lots of tables and chairs. As the incline is so steep, and the ground drops away immediately beyond the railings, and the greenery crowds you in, it is almost as if you are sitting in a tree house looking down on the world. It’s quite magical. And clearly a favourite amongst dog owners, as Alfie was one of three dogs sitting quietly with their owners watching each crumb of confection pass from plate to mouth. He took a long drink from the offered water bowl as we resumed our walk.

Take a peek at the virtual tour on the Richmond web site – you’re bound to want to visit it with your canine companion. The glass house is a must-see. http://www.richmond.gov.uk/home/leisure_and_culture/parks_and_open_spaces/improving_richmonds_parks/terrace_gardens_restoration.htm
