INTERVIEW: A quick chat with COMEDIAN Paul Chowdhry

London Art Scene from The Art Stop

Hi Paul, tell us who is your funny inspiration? I was a big fan of the American stand-ups, particularly Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, George Carlin and Sam Kinnison. Then Morcambe and Wise, Little and Large and Bruce Forsyth from the UK definitely inspired me to get into comedy. If you weren't a comedian, what would you do? I’d probably be working in film, I’m very interested in making films. I’m a big Stanley Kubrick fan and Martin Scorsese films are some of the best, then there’s Ron Jeremy, who was one of the biggest porn stars of the 80’s, so it ranges through all of those very intelligent film makers. Where are your favourite London hangouts? The Hammersmith Apollo is the best place to watch live comedy, it feels very intimate despite fitting 3000 people in the room. Tell us about your up coming DVD What's Happening White People? - what is your favourite line from the show? It’s probably “What’s Happening White People?” because that’s the name of the DVD and it’s an open-ended question so it brings you into the themes of the show and prepares you for all the gangster shit that I talk about. It also reminds me where I started. I used to go out on stages and most of the audiences were predominantly white so I’d go out there as a joke and say “What’s Happening White People?” then I ended up doing it on Channel 4 and a few TV shows and it became a catchphrase - people started saying it to me.
