A Londoner Travels

It's FINALLY here! It seems later than ever, but those of us who have been patiently waiting will be rewarded with Shrove Tuesday this week and a bevy of London restaurants have Pancake Day specials on their menus. Read on for our pick of the bunch...

Family favourite Bill's has a menu of sweet (£5.95) and savoury (£9.95) treats, from sweetcorn pancakes with poached eggs, feta and avocado to classics like lemon and sugar and delicious combinations of toppings like coconut ice cream and mango sauce. With the children's options including buttermilk pancakes with either bananas, strawberries, blueberries and Bill’s pancake syrup or with
vanilla ice cream and warm chocolate sauce (all just £3.50) it's definitely one for the little ones. www.bills-website.co.uk

US steakhouse Smith & Wollensky has created their biggest ever pancake stack for this year's Man vs Pancake challenge (pictured top right); not for the fainthearted, if you can devour your height in pancakes in one hour, you eat for free! Do bear in mind though that if you don't complete the challenge then it's £1 a pancake... Available for one day only on Tuesday, pre-book by calling 020 7321 6007 or emailing [email protected] 24 hours in advance. www.smithandwollensky.co.uk

Head down to Battersea for Pi Pizza’s unique mini pizza pancakes (£6). Available on Tuesday only they'll be topped with Chantilly cream, mixed berry slices, pistachios and drizzled with sticky maple syrup, the perfect Pancake Day treat (pictured bottom left). www.pi-pizza.co.uk

Elsewhere across the capital, Hippo Inns pubs - from The Royal Oak in Twickenham to The White Haus in Farringdon - will be offering a stack of deliciously fluffy pancakes, piled high and topped with strawberry, raspberry and banana with maple syrup, crème fraiche and mint, for just a fiver. www.hippoinns.com

Vegan diners should head to Fitzrovia's [b[Kalifornia Kitchen[/b] for their gluten free buckwheat and banana pancakes; with coconut yoghurt caramelised bananas and almond brittle they are sure to satisfy any craving (£8). www.kaliforniakitchen.co.uk

Celebrate Pancake Day with a Japanese twist at Akira on Kensington High Street with their Matcha Mille Crêpe, a beautiful dish made for Instagram, with layers of green tea crepes filled with a light matcha cream served with traditional mochi (£8, pictured bottom right). www.japanhouselondon.uk/eat/restaurant
