You really can’t go wrong with a scented candle at Christmas; indulgent, luxurious and something that’s all too easy to self-gift while you’re doing your festive shopping. There’s still time to pick up a couple of purchases this week before the big day, or of course to simply help you carry on the warming fragrance of Christmas even after the celebrations are long gone.

The irresistible Christmas Stocking candle from Sophie James Mayfair is a vibrant concoction that nails the scent of Christmas. Its aromatic, spicy scent opens with citrus orange and lemon, followed by rich, warm cinnamon and clove with hints of floral jasmine, on a base of woods and musk. It’s an all-enveloping fragrance, filling the house with warmth within minutes. You won’t be able to tear yourself away. £55 at www.sophiejamesmayfair.com

Molton Brown’s Rhubarb and Rose candle may not be a traditional scent, but if you’re a fan of something fresh and uplifting with a hint of sweetness, this is your scent. A vivacious blend of bitter rhubarb, zesty grapefruit and yuzu, its deliciously delicate. £39 at www.johnlewis.com

The Love Sleep Seduction candle from This Works is designed to help set the scene for sleep and sex with its romantic, sensual scent. The 13 Desserts offering from L’Occitane smells unbelievably delicious; think dried fruits, cinnamon, sweet orange and brown sugar - it’s the scent of Stir Up Sunday. In Provence, land of sharing and conviviality, it's customary to share 13 desserts with your guests at Christmas and the candle has been inspired by just that. It almost smells good enough to eat. £39 at www.loccitane.com
