Camberwell has been having a bit of a moment recently when it comes to food and drink and no more so than with the opening of Irene, a fantastically delicious new bakery.
Serving up sourdoughs, loaves, pastries, cakes and coffee by The Gentlemen Baristas, all Irene's breads are made on site along with a plethora of sweet and savoury pastries. Whether you're partial to a walnut loaf, strictly religious about sourdough or ready to try some spelt, Irene's loaf selection is irresistable. There are few greater pleasures in life that a freshly baked loaf and these really take the cake.
Speaking of, their sweets are to die for. While we of course appreciate an excellent classic croissant or pain au chocolat, who could resist delicate layers of flaky pastry with a trio of crême patissiere-ensconced raspberries nestled in its midst, a juicy berry turnover or a crisp apple delight sprinkled with pistachios? Having tried a (vast) selection of the range, we defy you to try just one.
But that's not all, for alongside the bakery sits a boutique wine shop, where wines on sale are available by the glass and bottle to drink in from midday. Offering a carefully curated range of vinos, most are organic wines from small producers in France, Italy and Spain and are a quirky and unusual selection that are a true reflection of their environment.
Opening from Wednesday - Friday 8am-5pm and Saturday - Sunday 9am-5pm
