A TICK FOR THE LONDON BUCKET LIST - CLIMBING UP AT THE O2

Love London

I don't know about you, but I'm one for trying new things and Up at The O2 is one that's been at the back of my mind for a while. Earlier this year it made it on to my list of 40 things to do in celebration of my forthcoming 40th birthday, and with saying sayonara to summer it's the perfect autumn experience to try out.

With multiple climbs every day, including at sunset and twilight, it's exhilirating at any hour. Where else can you get a 360 view of Greenwich, The Olympic Park and Canary Wharf? After a safety demonstration at ground level, you're buckled up into your harness and ready for your climb. Having been inside the O2 for more gigs I care to admit, this marked the first time climbing on top of it, though after scaling the Sydney Harbour Bridge and a 101 storey skyscraper in New York last year, it's safe to say there were no nerves.

There's a steep ascent in parts, but with the right shoes on (and fear not, they can provide if yours don't have the right grip) it's nothing to worry about. Climbing up the view gets better and better and if you're lucky enough to do it on a gig night, chances are you'll get a free soundtrack and light show as well as the show rumbles under your feet. The whole experience is around an hour and a half, including a photo stop at the top to take in the sights and the lights. With a fridge up on the roof, you can also pre-order a tipple to enjoy at the top. It was a brilliant experience and one we won't forget in a hurry.

What's more, if you're climbing this week you might be treated to a show from the Stars of the West End as they take to the roof for London’s highest performances of musical hits.

Featuring a selection of musical classics, fan favourite medleys and rock-inspired hits, all reimagined in spectacular four-part harmonies, there’s something for everyone at these sky-high performances, available on the Twilight Climbs at 19:00, 19:30 and 20:00. this Thursday 26th and Friday 27th September. The showstopping sets will feature five of the biggest and best voices directly from London’s West End, with previous performance credits including the likes of Matilda The Musical, We Will Rock You, Rock Of Ages, The Choir Of Man, Bat Out Of Hell, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Time Travellers Wife, RENT, and more. Following a guided climb up and over the world’s busiest venue, climbers will enjoy extended time on the roof where they will be treated to a 20-minute performance of musical hits at the summit, whilst enjoy a complimentary KitKat from Nestlé and soaking up panoramic views of the illuminated London skyline. This event is suitable for those aged 18+, with tickets available for £45 per person (just £7 more than a regular Twilight Climb) and available to book here

Back down on solid ground, The O2 is home to over 30 bars and restaurants and a range of interactive bars and attractions, not to mention a shopping outlet with over 60 well known and designer brands at up to 70% off RRP all year round. We headed to GAUCHO post climb to refuel on one of their delicious steaks and a glass of wine, but with everything from Wagamama and Five Guys to Nando's and Pizza Express, there's something for everyone.
