Kids in London - AC/DC at the O2

KimT's London for Kids Blog

Under cover of my teenage son and his friend and my 11 year old daughter, I put on my "Dirty deeds done dirt cheap" tee (no one wears leather jackets anymore apparently) and set off for the O2 to see AC/DC - a band that I have wanted to see live for as long as I can remember.

Ecstatic to learn that my good friend had upgraded my tickets to a box and I had access to the VIP Lounge - although I was sad not to be smashed up against all those heavy metal fans in the main bars.

A little later than the advertised 730pm, the support band "The Answer" appeared. Northern Irish with a lead singer that my son said looked like "The Thing" from the Addams Family but who moved well and should seek sponsorship from Timotei shampoo. Not terribly impressed although their final track "Under the sky" with a suitably Celtic rock and roll harmonica was memorable.

By this time the stadium had filled up - and there were plenty of glowing red horns in the crowd. OK - not quite the same atmosphere as Iron Maiden at Twickenham but somehow more intimate.

The set started with a suitably risque runaway train video and the crowd went wild - and then fireworks across the stage revealed a huge steam train and the fun began. I always wonder how Angus feels about putting on his school uniform for each gig. And I pondered how old Brian must be - but still looking extremely good in his flat cap and waist coat (check out those biceps). The original cheeky chappy (eat your heart out Robbie!).

Back in Black generated a healthy crowd response and then they switched to "Big Jack" from the new album. My fave - "Dirty Deeds" - was up next - and I was so happy I nearly jumped from the box. They had placed some strong glass blocks on the stage so you could see the Angus duck walk from below - awesome shots. Shot down in flames followed.

Thunderstruck worked the crowd into a good natured frenzy - my small group joining in enthusiastically as well. And even the more up tight looking fellow members of the box getting decidedly more vocal and bouncy.

Watching the sheen of sweat forming over the band, they did Black Ice and Shot down in Flames. Then the cameras started picking out the few girls from the audience and Angus did a comical strip before they belted out the bluesy "The Jack" - mellow, mellow, mellow.

Hells Bells and then into War Machine but by then my 11 year old decided that she had had enough. I reluctantly took her home - and my boy reported that an inflatable woman and an awesome guitar solo at the end of the walk way should not have been missed. Highway to Hell was the encore act.

All part of a rounded education...
