The Night Tube arrives!

We Are London

After much stalling Boris Johnson has confirmed the 24 hour tube will finally start running this summer.

It was initially set to start last September, but after the plans were announced 20,000 tube workers went on strike. Unsurprisingly this angered thousands of commuters, but the reason for the strike was not over pay as was widely reported - it was over forcing staff to work unsociable hours which they hadn't been consulted about.

Tube driver Mike Davey wrote an open letter on Facebook to clarify this. "I have never been opposed to the Night Tube, but it has to be introduced in a way that is fair; that recognises that staff are human beings with lives and families as well as a job". Davey explained that tube workers would have to work 14 weeks of nights each year instead of just the one.

Earlier this month the unions accepted a new deal, so from July onwards the Victoria and Jubilee lines will run all night on Fridays and Saturdays. If all goes to plan, the Piccadilly, Central and Northern lines will follow in September.

TfL say demand is clear as late night tube use has increased at double the rate of day time travel. This is great news for everyone wanting to avoid the dreary bus ride home after a night out.

There is a downside however. According to market research studies, properties close to stations on the night tube routes could increase in value by 10%. Stratford and Finsbury Park will be the two areas most likely to be hit, so if you're thinking of moving there you might face paying more for the privilege of the all-night tube.

Are you happy the 24 hour tube is finally arriving? Are you concerned about the rise in house prices? Or does it seem a bit pointless given the recent curbs in licensing hours? Leave us a comment on Twitter, Google+ or Facebook.
