Apprentice Cafe: New Tourist Hotspot

The All In London Blog

With its bulging bacon sarnies and manly mugs of tea it's long been a favourite stop-off for the capital's cabbies and builders.

But thanks to a starring role in BBC1's The Apprentice, the Bridge Café in Acton, west London, is fast becoming a destination for "telly tourists" too.

Fans of the show are making a pilgrimage to the tucked-away café, the location where the losing team are filmed squabbling over who should return to the boardroom.

Gerry Marcangelo, 65, and his brother Frank, 62, have run the business since their father bought it for them in 1962.

Gerry said: "The studios are just down the road and they just came in and asked if we'd do it. Frank watches the show but I can't be doing with it.

"I'd much rather be watching football and boxing on Sky to be honest. I wouldn't know who any of them are - put it this way, they're not exactly my kind of people!"

The café has now featured in three series of The Apprentice, although unsurprisingly Sir Alan Sugar himself has never popped in for a fry-up.

Gerry's not that keen on the café's new-found fame.

He said: "It was OK in the beginning but it's getting a bit out of hand now. Too many people keep ringing up all the time. I don't know what the attraction is to be honest.

"People keep coming in and asking: 'Is this where they do the Apprentice?'. They came down from Liverpool to do an article the other day. Must be mad, I can't see it myself."

The Marcangelo brothers come from a catering dynasty.

Their Italian grandfather, their father Anthony, and their uncles all ran cafes in London.

The Bridge has appeared on TV before. In the '80s, popstars Mel and Kim were filmed here and more recently comedian David Baddiel was interviewed in the café.

So how about cashing in on their new-found fame? Perhaps an 'Apprentice Breakfast' to bring in the punters?

"No way," says Gerry. "My daughter suggested we get some mugs and put 'You're fired!' on them, but I don't think it's us really - I'm too old and miserable!"

The key question of course is who wins the show?

"I've no idea," says Frank. "It's all top secret."

And being the booby prize? Well, that's just fine says Frank.

"I don't mind if they're OK about it. Sometimes they're a little bit rude but mostly they're nice. As long as we get plenty of customers from it we'll be happy."
