Beckenham Place Park

Beckenham Place Park is Lewisham’s largest green open space and also an important wildlife conservation space. The 96 hectare park attracts nature lovers, golf enthusiasts and people who are just out for a walk with their dog. Aside from the 18-hole golf course there are tennis courts and football pitches. Avid animal-spotters might be able to see parakeets, foxes, wood mice and even badgers; the park is equally rich in terms of flora thanks to its combination of woodland, grassland and having several ponds. There are oak trees, elms, sycamores, hazel and mulberry plants – regular guided walks take place should you wish to learn more, as well as conservation workshops. Beckenham Place Park was opened to the public in the late 1920s, after London Council County purchased the land as there was a lack of public parks in the borough. Visitors will find information about the park’s history and its listed buildings at the visitor’s centre, however it’s only open on Sunday afternoons. The park opens at 8am daily and shuts at dusk.
