Play dress up at Cherry Jam’s new night

There aren’t many dancefloors around this part of West London, but bar cum nightclub Cherry Jam is one of the area’s few late opening venues. The second and fourth Fridays of the month are taken over by The Loose Cannons, aka Kaiser Saucy and Lord Fader. The duo formerly had a residency at Hoxton Pony, and have also hosted a weekly radio show on Kiss FM where they favoured the likes of Green Velvet, Julio Bashmore, and plenty of electro. Their sets can encompass anything from hip hop to pop to indie, (mostly well-known tunes to encourage inebriated sing-alongs), but at Cherry Jam they are more likely to play crowd-pleasing electro-house.

It’s a fancy dress night, but for those caught short of a costume (or who simply don’t have the courage to play dress up sober) a rail of clothing is provided at the club complete with feather boas, cowboy hats and other accessories of a similar ilk.

The club suffers somewhat from being located in a bit of a desert when it comes to night time entertainment - there are few passers-by looking for a night on the tiles around Royal Oak tube station – but while its launch night could have done with a few more people, the happy hour (2 for 1 cocktails, beer and house wine before 10pm) is sure to entice the punters along to future events.

Sexy cocktails and dancing at this glamorous West London club

The entrance to Cherry Jam is dark and on the dingy side, giving the impression that despite its perky name this may turn out to be a Berlin-esque warehouse rather than a “boutique bar and club”, however things get more colourful as we descend the staircase. The club has one room with pink under-lighting, a fluorescent green bar, and three booths with a cheeky cow print on the seating. The DJ booth sits to one side of the shiny dancefloor, and given the latter’s modest size it’s clear Cherry Jam is more bar than club, somewhere to indulge in a drink and a shimmy or two before heading elsewhere, particularly given that it closes at 2 am (this is a largely residential part of Westbourne Park after all). A glamorous, over 25, VIP-loving crowd turns up to party, and the odd celeb has been known to stop by too, but that’s not to say it’s at all snooty on the door.

So what is the music like? On Wednesdays you’ll get R’n’B, 80s pop and neo soul. Fridays is for house music of a commercial or uplifting ilk, and The Loose Cannons’ new fortnightly residency is a fancy dress night with a twist - rather than faff around at home trying to find a suitable costume the clothing is provided for you here, in a specially-designated dress up area. On Saturdays there is more catchy house music in the disco vein, mainstream enough to please the crowds without bordering on cheesy. The cocktail list is suitably sexy, with plenty of sweet refreshing fruits and strong alcohol; the Kerasi is a very fragrant concoction of peaches and cherries with champagne and lemon, while the lychee martini is a saccharine sweet blend of lychee juice, apple juice, crème de bananes and vodka. Priced between £9 and £12 you’ll soon build up a hefty tab if you keep knocking them back, however there’s a 2 for 1 Happy Hour on Fridays until 10 pm. You can also get in for free till 10 pm on Fridays and 9 pm on Saturdays, but the place doesn’t really start buzzing till midnight.
