Tiny unfussy bar hides a multitude of Polish concoctions

This teeny tiny venue tucked away in an alley near Holborn station has a well-stocked selection of Polish snacks and alcoholic beverages. Visually it’s nothing to write home about, with its lack of decoration and the austere grey walls having something of the Communist Bloc about them, but the black leather seating is squishy and comfortable and there is even a scattering of plain metal tables outside for alfresco drinking. Popular amongst the local professionals who pop in for a quick after-work tipple, it’s quiet during the day and Saturday nights are hit and miss, it’s either uncomfortably empty or bustling without being too cramped, ideal if you’re trying to get away from the West End masses.

Naturally you’ll find vodkas, like the famous Zubrowska and Wyborova among many many others that are flavored, infused or just plain smooth - there are around 50 different types on offer. There are bottled beers like Zubr and Tatra, and should you not fancy anything Eastern European you can always stick to a sacrilegious bottle of Pinot Grigio, but then you’re better off venturing to the nearby All Bar One. There is plenty of food for the hungry – smoked sausage, dumplings, potato pancakes, meat stews with sauerkraut and even desserts - you can forget about the concept of a light bar meal as the dishes here are designed for the harsh Polish winter. Best of all, you can stuff yourself silly on Polish nosh for less than £20.

Vodka may have lost some cred to gin and vermouth in recent times, but this Polish bar near Holborn is still one of the gems of London’s bar scene. Looks-wise it’s simple and canteen-like, but no matter, there are more than 50 types of vodka, from dry to sweetened, and thankfully there are Polish snacks to line your stomach with too.
