All In London Review

Vintage, retro, cocktail bar quirk.

Review Image
Cocktails in teacups, retro wallpaper, ‘quirky’ decorations, vintage fun… is Camden ready for all this? Located at the foot of Camden High Street and exactly adjacent to the supersized Koko, you’ll find cocktail bar Simmons. With a popular sister venue in Kings Cross, the Camden venue brings more of the same charm to an area not so synonymous with classy cocktail bars.

Set back behind a narrow shop front façade there is much more to Simmons than meets the eye. A spacious back room, a compact bar area and makeshift dance floor are decorated with loud wallpaper (loud in a good way), vintage collectables, retro games consoles and a large disco skull. All very easy on the eye, if a touch unblemished. A happy hour runs daily from 5pm till 9pm, which is possibly one of the best around. That’s four hours of cocktails – many of which come served in teacups – at two for £10. Strawberry Cheese Cake is a popular choice (the menu is skewed towards dessert based drinks) while there is a range of classics too. We opt for the Apples and Pears – a sweet concoction that mixes vanilla vodka with apple and pear puree to moreish effect. The teapot and teacup presentation is impressive and the flavours mask the alcohol in the sweet drink, which could make this happy hour a dangerous one.

Playful and buzzing, Simmons is no snooty cocktail bar. Pre-Koko drinks would be just as applicable as stopping in for an intimate Thursday date night, and that is the bar’s charm. Camden just better be ready for this easygoing mix of vintage, retro cocktail bar quirk.

The theme here is retro, and boy do they go to town on that! Imagine a really weird dream involving 70’s décor (dodgy wallpaper, kitschy art and flying ducks), dozens of old table lamps and a huge glitterball skull. School desks serve as tables complete with original graffiti.
There’s a main room with a bar and an equally retro, but slightly more restrained, back room.
To continue with the retro theme, some of the cocktails come in teacups, and rather than getting a pitcher to share you can have a teapot. Prices are a little bit steep, but they have an insane five-hour happy hour every day
Have your say
