All In London Review

The artisan store that everybody wants on their doorstep.

Review Image
Doing a fine line in all things craft beer, Hop Burns and Black is the artisan store that everybody wants on their doorstep. Near to the well-heeled thoroughfare of Lordship Lane, a road not unfamiliar with its own trendy cheese and fine wine emporiums, the shop is an Aladdin’s cave of rare brewery offerings that even the most knowledgeable of beer fans could get lost in.

Stocked full to bursting with exotic offerings from both the world of micro-brewing and more established craft outfits, it seems almost silly to reel off a list of the bottles you can pick up at this outpost on East Dulwich Road, given the amount of them. But what we will say is it that beyond the bottles, the shop sells a range of draught beer that comes in pressurized flagons (growlers to some) to takeaway. When we visit we have the choice between a Brew By Numbers ale and a Howling Hops Pale.

Besides the beer – which is clearly the main event – Hop Burns and Black sells an array of small-batch hot sauce supplied by independent makers keen to do their bit for getting your taste buds off the Encona and onto something a little more subtle. And if you thought hot sauce and craft beer resembled something like peak gentrification then how about a small vintage vinyl section and a sweet on-site cafe thrown in for good measure? Of course, nothing at Hop Burns and Black comes cheap but then you could probably already have guessed that. What this shop does give you is access to all the beers you wouldn’t have a hope of finding on your own and that’s worth shelling out a little extra for now and again.
