All In London Review
Great beer garden and a cosy interior make for the perfect year-round pub
Escaping from the carnage that was Newham County Fair, we sought refuge in the Railway Tavern and found a pub that almost made up for missing out on the urban owl show.
While no pub can be expected to completely make up for missing out on owls swooping around Brockwell Park in daylight, the Railway came close. Located outside Tulse Hill station, the gigantic pub is home to one of south London’s most interesting beer gardens. Tree houses tucked into shady wooded corners, secret pods on stilts and more seating than most pubs have on the inside, this is one for the summer. However, flip it around and the deep sofas, heavy wood tables and board games inside make it exactly the kind of place you could spend a whole winter weekend. So there you have it, the Railway; a year round type of place.
Featuring an on trend menu filled with pulled pork, burgers, steaks and various vegetarian options, the Railway seems to get most things right, offering much more than the average pub grub. Clearly to keep a place of this size going you need to get as many people through the door as possible, which explains the live music, comedy, Sky Sports, open mic and quiz nights that make up part of the events calendar. It’s a lively, buzzing place with more than enough going on to drag people from Brixton and Herne Hill to the neighbourhood and we’ll be back for sure.
