A fine old Fitzrovia pub that wears its history proudly - just as a pub that survived the Blitz should do...

Having made a habit of exploring the area north of Oxford Street over the past few months I have found that Fitzrovia is a neighbourhood filled with classic, under-visited pubs. The historical architecture remains and pubs seem settled and staid while everything else around them changes. In particular, there is the Mason’s Arms. Much of Devonshire Street was built under the direction of John Nash and when you cast an eye back to the original street directory of 1841, you can still see the pub listed by name. Apparently much of this area was affected by World War II bombing but the Mason’s Arms was untouched. But whether or not you’re interested in the historical side of London pubs, the Mason’s Arms will likely charm you anyway.

Inside, the traditional interior exudes age and class. You’ll find solid wood, brass and copper everywhere, along with a collection of trinkets that tends to crowd the space. At the bar the beer selection is adequate although the weekly rotating ales trump the generic range of lagers. The pub enforces its independent credentials with its food menu. Forget pies and fish and chips, the historic pub takes a different route with a Thai menu. Cheap, tasty and not a chip in sight – we like it.

In the winter you’ll find it dimly lit and cosy and in the summer you’ll find most people utilising the standing space beneath the impressive flower boxes that cover the exterior. A popular pub for all seasons, you can always expect to find it filled with locals.

great improvement at this boozer,well decorated excellent thai food decent pint
service top notch,great portuguese barman behind the bar together with a girl from croydon what a pair!!!SPLENDID.
