Forget the controversial name... the Job Centre is a welcome place in Deptford to get good beer and interesting food

The only problem with the Antic Group’s domination of London’s new pub scene is that we’re beginning to realise that so many of the pubs we’re going to are just thinly disguised versions of each other. But fair enough, when you’ve got a template that works, why not stick to it?

The Job Centre in Deptford attracted some criticism on opening for the apparent lack of sensitivity in its name – it was an actual job centre before this, in a city where unemployment figures and government cuts leave a large majority of its population disinclined to laugh at the irony. Still, it did at least have a local jobs board in one corner, although on our recent visit that had disappeared. Anyway, we’re just here to run the rule and debate its merits rather than the name, and besides, Antic do have a tradition of naming their pubs after the old buildings they inhabit.

After all that, the Job Centre is actually… fine. Spacious, stylish and left just unpolished enough to nail that urban rustic thing. There’s a good range of beers on draught – both cask and keg – and a cocktail list that keeps it simple. The theme for food is Kitchen Hijack, essentially a rotating array of street food vendors doing the honours week by week. There’s a mixed age range here on our Saturday night visit, which is always good to see in an area where students make for a healthy percentage of the population. Quieter than you’d expect, it offered a surprisingly good place for some casual drinking. Good size tables, pockets of dancing and a general positive atmosphere. The name may rub you up the wrong way but the pub won’t.
