London's best beer gardens
As if the garden at the back of The Britannia on Victoria Park Road wasn’t great enough, it runs onto the vast expanse of Victoria Park itself. So, if your wandering gets up a thirst there’s always the picnic benches, beers and bloody mary’s of The Britannia to sustain you for another lap of the park.

Our pick of London pubs with open fires
Formerly The Britannia, The People’s Park Tavern is big enough to boast more than just the one open fire. Think red chesterfields, beer brewed on site and homemade pies to go with the cosy wood burners. And if you’re really lucky you’ll visit on a day when the huge garden that leads out onto Victoria Park is covered in a blanket of snow. Now that would be really cosy.

Once known as The Britannia, this vast Victoria Park boozer has transformed itself into the not so easy on the tongue, ‘The People’s Park Tavern’. And it’s looking good. The name was inspired by the old moniker once given to the next door Victoria Park and the change has brought with it a new take on the giant beer garden, a new food menu and an on-site micro brewery to establish its very ‘now’ credentials.

Although the location – far from any Tube line - might suggest that this is one for Hackney locals, the quality of the venue attracts visitors from all over. Victoria Park Village is a destination and the short walk to The People’s Park Tavern for good beer, a modern-gastro interior and similarly gastro food is nothing.

First the food; the menu highlights include beef wellington, scallops and pork cheek & crispy ham hock which all look like they would make an appealing end to a long walk around the park. And the fried custard with vanilla ice cream and candied pistachios is a dessert we will be returning for.

With a garden that already backs onto the park, the pub has chosen to transform the simple patch of grass that was previously here and do something different. Since the new owners took over they have filled the space with fresh turf, twice the number of tables, subtle landscaped flowerbeds and the odd sheltered hacienda for that intimate outdoors touch. Naturally, the place is packed in summer and you get the sense that surviving through winter is the problem here. But this is where the brewery comes in. Producing the People’s Pilsner, IPA and Porter, there is a selection of craft beer fresh from the source. As well as their own brews they stock a selection of quality beers from around the world.

Friday and Saturday nights are sound tracked by DJs playing anything from rock n roll to hip-hop – just depends on which night you turn up. There is plenty of space to sit and plenty of room to dance which are just two more reasons for making this journey into Hackney.

"This lively young pub is one of the village’s best"

At the Britannia you get a lively young pub and the illusion of a whole park thrown in with it, as its ample garden backs onto Victoria Park like a landed infinity pool. Located on the western side of the park and accessible at the end of Victoria Park Road, without a doubt this is one of the village’s best.

It has formerly filled itself with open air summer film nights but now relies on weekly barbecues, quiz nights and a general attitude of fun and games to keep the pretentious at bay. Its regulars are a mixed group who don’t just visit from the hipper side of Hackney, with interest in it from the Wick and beyond- a good thing as the huge space needs all the filling it can get. Separated into two distinct sides, one of chunky dining tables and the other a lounge of old sofas, velvet drapes, dj booth and dance floor, it’s as happy in the day as it gets at night.

Enjoy the twisted pleasure of a Sunday roast outside in the summer garden or go to the grill for burgers and ribs. Inside, the menu is about gastro favourites like beer battered fish and chips and belly of pork and the restaurant cuisine sits swell as part of the pub. Drinks are fairly generic on the whole but there are always good ale selections, jugs of Bloody Mary and wine by the carafe.

I can’t fail to mention the life the pub leads beyond its bread and butter with irregular swap shops, live music and a base as performance space for Hackney’s fringe scene. So, with so much to get out of it there’s nothing left to say but go visit, it’s a Brit of alright... Get it?!

Fantastic wine really nice venue, but staff are unbelievable, was asked to leave at closing time, explained that I'd only just been give a number for the local cab company to a response of "you don't look like your going anywhere" I said "I'm on the phone to the company now, just given to me by staff" which they seemed even more rude suggesting that I was lying!! Ended up in an argument with them calling me a liar!! I've just spent £120 in the venue, I can not believe the treatment I've just received! I will not be returning...
