Quirky French Café

Review Image
We’d spent the morning wandering around Greenwich – looking at The Cutty Sark, pottering in the market and visiting the Travel Photography exhibition at a local college. We wanted to sit and have tea and cake.

It’s a small shop and bistro but unique. There are quirky garden chairs and interesting tables crafted from wooden wine crates. It’s arty. I bet it’s rather romantic in the evening. The windows look out onto the street so it would be a good place to people watch too.

The waiting staff were French, passionate about the food and champagne and helpful. The authentic French menu included tartines, snails, cheese (50 varieties) and charcuterie boards, salads and seasonal specials.

A two course lunch costs £9.95 and if you want the champagne version it’s £17.95.

There was a full champagne afternoon tea (£30) on the menu – including three cheeses, macarons and biscuits - but we weren’t up for that. So we choose some tea (huge cups and a pot provided) and selected some delightfully sticky sweet treats – little sponge cups filled with a warm salted caramel sauce. These were elegantly served on a wooden board.

The only other customers when we were there were an older group of people who appeared to be enjoying the champagne and a younger couple.

The small bar area was bedecked with hams and cured meats which they use to prepare the various platters. There were bottles of excellent looking wines in shelves across an entire wall.

It was a really pleasant stopping point and we only wished that we had more time to linger there.

Two teas and a shared portion (three cakes) of canelés came to £11.35 which we thought was good value and certainly much better than a chain tea or coffee house.

There are also branches in Covent Garden and Brixton.
