A charming pit stop for lovers of tea
Good & Proper Tea started out as a mobile tea truck, and you can still find their van parked up at Brockley Market every Saturday. With a little help from a Kickstarter fund they set up shop, first on Old Street, then at this site on Leather Lane, which is just past the busy market. Here they stock teas from all over, including caffeine-free Rooibos from South Africa, Assam from India, and green teas from Japan. They also have a concise menu of food made daily on the premises.
It's an airy, bright cafe with plenty of seating, seemingly popular with customers working away on laptops. We try the classic green tea Yojicha, and a caramel-scented Oolong Eastern Beauty; both are £3 and are served in large glass teapots to be poured into Japanese-style cups.
All the food - even the salted butter - is homemade, the staff tell us the only thing the chef doesn't do herself is slaughter the animals. The menu has breakfast dishes like granola, and the counter has cakes including lemon drizzle and date and pecan loaf. We go for a pork and apple sausage roll, very well seasoned and wrapped in nice thin pastry, with fiery English mustard on the side. The soft, doughy sourdough crumpet with jam is excellent, and looks part crumpet part waffle. Thankfully they've chosen not to give it a trendy hybrid name (a crumple perhaps? a wafflet?) Quips aside, this is a charming little pit stop for tea lovers.
