i am 47, and occasionally grumpy. I never have a problem getting a seat( and I am notblondor slim, or frail!) but I am possibly one of the ones you are complaining about- if I see a seat i go for it! I find a genuine smile in a stand off is often a useful means of getting the seat!

i was commuting whilst 8 months pregnant and even had to stand then...to be fair i think it was mainly due to the fact that the carriages were so full no-one could see my bump and i'm far too british to think about asking someone for their seat directly...

I can understand how she feels...but you have to expect that on the tube, then you WONT be disapointed eh?.

Seriously though, I have got chatting to some lovely people on the tube. And I would like to say a BIG THANKYOU to a very helpfull young man who helped me get from Waterloo to Borough, even getting my ticket from the machine for me, as I had forgot my reading glasses ;) ok he worked at the station, but he did go out of his way to help me...and no I am not twenty LOL...but I am blonde ;) I think it is a two way thing . Btw he was as cute and handsome as any twenty yr old could wish for :) darn it ...

It has nothing to do with age, but how you are brought up, manners ect, he was a lovely young man who did his job superbly and made me, who has no sense of direction ;) feel as if here was someone who cared, was helpful, smiling and chatty..come to think of it..just like me :)
And to the lady who was pregnant and had to stand..disgraceful, you would have thought no matter the age, somebody would have offered you their seat, I guess its because I am half Canadian, that I WOULD have asked if someone could let me sit down...due to, then I would pat my tummy to let them see, and I would hope at least one person would have the decency to give up their seat, good luck next time :)

Hilary :)

I love the tube in London, except during the rush hours of course. It's a part of the journey and it's a easiest way to discover the town.

haha i agree with aly's analagy of it being a 3/5 minute tube ride - u know in the time it took grumpy old woman to open this site, log in, start a new post and type out her thing - her tube ride woulda been over in less time than that.

what an even bigger waste of time taking even longer to whinge about it when it takes less time to acutally complete the task.

and if ur 51 not frail not pregnant and capable of asking someone for a seat - then do it. if not

tough titties!!! (excuse the pun)

I'm 24 and blonde. I've never had anyone give up a seat for me in my life, least of all when I was 20. Not even when I had an operation and my foot was heavily bandaged, nope, no seat for me! Lots of nice people making a point of stepping on it though! :P

Never seen anyone give up a seat for a yound lady anyway. I've only ever seen it be done on the bus for elderly persons. If someone's 51 and looks healthy, I must say, I wouldn't give up my seat. 51 is not old these days.
