Powerstation on the way to Gatwick airport

Hello,

I am an art historian and I have been staying in London for a couple of days. When I got to Gatwick airport, I saw this gorgeous power station from Gatwick express. Looks like ironic postmodern architecture with its four white doric columns on red brick architecture, but it must be erected at the beginning of the 20th century (1916-22?), I suppose. Does anybody know anything about this powerstation, its name, its architect and its history? Thanks to all art historians and industrial architecture lovers!

Hi Anke,

Yes, this is a well-known London landmark... it's the Battersea Power Station

It was designed by Giles Gilbert Scott, an architect that made some considerable contributions around the UK, notably in London, other designs of his include the Bankside power station a little further down the Thames that now houses the Tate Modern Art Gallery.
