Relocating 2 London with 2 1/2 year old daughter

I am moving to London in January 2006 and would like some advice as to where I should look to rent a place where there is a good environment and good creches/nursery schools for little children. This is the most important thing to me, from there I will find a job nearby or in central London where I can get paid well - someone mentioned St Albans as a nice area just outside London? Does anyone have any other ideas? I dont think I will earn more than 500pounds a week???? Not sure yet???
