I don't think it's necessarily strange or dangerous, just be real careful about meeting somewhere public and not giving awaying any info about where you live, last name etc until you've had a chance to work out whether whoever you're meeting has a creepy vibe.

But you might want to give people a bit more general information in your post so they can get an idea of whether you might be a compatible friend, e.g. your age, interests and that kinda thing.

Whilst it can be made a lot safer by doing as you suggested I think meeting people from internet forums with only a user name and a handful of posts to go on is something we wouldn't recommend. Other sites allow you to get a much better idea of someone before you agree to meet, for example the larger dating websites. If you're looking to meet people in London we'd recommend the organised social/dating services, some of which list with us in our what's on section:
