Family of four are travelling up to London on Friday or Saturday of this week. We will be coming up from Bristol on the M4 and would like some suggestions on where to park - free if possible or reasonably cheap and then train/tube in depending on how far out we park. We are going to Oxford Street (God help me!) for shopping with teenagers!!! Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi there Bugs

Welcome to our forums.

It makes a big difference if it's Friday or Saturday for the congestion charge and parking.

If you're travelling up on Friday I'd recommend parking up in somewhere like Chiswick - it's a 30 minute tube journey into the West End but you'll reap the rewards when you come to leave London at rush hour! There's an NCP car park near Osterley Tube Station (Piccadilly Line), the rates on the NCP site for this car park are:

Daily tariffs
Sunday 24 Hours £ 2.00
Saturday £ 2.00
1 Day £ 3.50
2 Days £ 7.00
3 Days £ 10.50
4 Days £ 14.00
5 Days £ 17.50

Trying to park anywhere other than a proper car park would be a real problem because of residents permits - to get away from permits you need to travel quite far out.

An alternative would be to drive in to Shepherd's Bush NCP, although you'll be right in the heart of the rush hour traffic if you leave at the wrong time.

Hammersmith NCP prices:
Daily tariffs
2 Hours £ 4.60
2 To 4 Hours £ 8.50
4 To 6 Hours £ 11.00
6 To 9 Hours £ 12.00
9 To 12 Hours £ 16.00
12 To 24 Hours £ 19.00

If you're travelling up on Saturday then I'd recommend driving closer into town. Lots of the areas outside of Zone 1 allow anyone to park in residents zones on Saturdays. I know that you can do this in St John's Wood and Maida Vale. Alternatively you can use one of the central car parks - not cheap but very convenient.

The Wigmore Street NCP would be ideal:

Each 15 Minutes £ 1.60
Max Per Day £ 32.00
Night Rate 1800-0900 £ 6.00
Motorcycle Per Day £ 4.00

Hope that's of some use, enjoy Oxford Street :)

Whilst there have a look at St Christopher's Place, you can get to it from a small alleyway (Gees Court Passage) right opposite Bond Street station.
