Moving to England :D

Hi,

I have been browsing on these boards for a while now, and have just decided to join.

Me and my family have been thinking about moving out of the States for a while, and my husband just got a job offer in England that he is thinking about accepting. We have never been to the UK before, and so I thought I'd ask the locals about some questions that I have, if you have the time to answer them.

First off: We have two kids -- a 17 and 15 yr old -- and we're really looking for an area that's very family friendly to move to. Low crime. A newer area would be great, that has a lot of shopping centers near by, and that is safe. We'd like to buy a house or flat around London, but not in the center of it.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Any help would be appreciated. Or if you need for me to be any more specific, let me know.

Thank you! Thumbs Up

Hi there
Great choice to move to London :) Such a great place!!

It's difficult to give very helpful suggestions without knowing a bit more such as rough budget, how far out you would consider living and which direction your husband would be working and therefore which side of London you would need to be on...

Without knowing any of this...

St John's Wood is a great family-friendly place in central London and has what I've heard is a very good American School (if that interests you).

Other nice, fairly central areas are Hampstead, Crouch End, Muswell Hill, Dulwich

A bit further out (you'd have to catch an overland train into Waterloo) are places like Kingston, Walton on Thames, Surbiton... all still relatively good value and family friendly. Kingston has excellent shopping facilities as well as being a stone's throw from Richmond Park.

To be honest though, with a bit more info from you I think we could give more specific and helpful suggestions.
