Yep they're great cameras, really useable - and you get a hell of a lot of zoom for the price! x12 optical isn't it? ... and at under £200. Great camera.

How instant is the shutter on it? Does it take a picture as soon as you press the button or is there a delay? ... I used to have a digital camera and I'm sure the shutter lag on it was about a second, which was useless for action shots as the subject had gone in the time it took the take the picture!

I've got a few cameras:

A Nikon D100
A medium format Mamiya 645 (film)
A Lumix DCM-TZ5 compact

... and of all them I probably end up using the little compact the most - it's just so easy to put in your pocket - and you don't have to bring all the extra equipment with you such as lenses and flashes etc! Plus it's got really good functionality and a wide angle and a x10 optical zoom. I really love it.

yeah i think its 12 x optical zoom and yeah the shutter speed is slow about a second, its not as great as say a nikon my sister has the d50 its quite basic but i think its much beter but i love my little camera for starters. gonna get a little compact too your right its so much easier on the pocket!

any ideas on the best not so pricey compact?

I really like the Lumix DMC-TZ5. I've had it about 4 months now and I think it's great. It produces results as good as my SLR and it's so convenient to carry around... and they won't break the bank either, I've seen then for about £180. (Although I bought mine for about £270... they saw me coming :()

It isn't the smallest compact out there, but the combination of the wide-angle (28mm) and the zoom (x10) make it one of the most useful imo.

My other half has also got a Lumix (DMC-FX35) which is tiny - great for just slipping in your pocket and that's got an ultra wide angle lens (25mm) and a x4 zoom. Also a brilliant camera. Can't quite remember how much it was... about £200 I think.

I'd really recommend a Lumix they're metering is really good and they've got great lenses. (Only down-side, I was a little disappointed with them in low-light conditions.)

... but truth be told technology is advancing so quickly now all compact digi cameras are pretty good; and won't break the bank either.

What sort of thing do you want to use it for? Snapping or creative stuff?
