Within your budget you could go for the Canon 1000D. For around £323 you can get the body and a 18-55mm IS lens -(Image Stabilizer) from Jessops.
I would recommend this for a beginner.

If you buy before January 12th 2009 you can also claim back £30 from Canon bringing the cost down to £293.

Go into the shops and handle the cameras. Find one that is comfortable to use.

How much are the Nikon D50s now?

I used to have a d70 and I thought it was pretty good. Some of the metering was a bit shady at times, but apparently that's been ironed out now.

I'm sure they were about £400 earlier in the year (body only) so I'm sure (with the credit crunch and all) you'll be able to pick one up with a lens thrown in for under £400.

That's a model that might also be worth a look?

I think if you get a couple of possibilites in mind head, for a camera store and have a trial with both of them in and around the shop taking picture of exactly the same subjects - a head to head test - and see how you get on with them and look at the results.

I used to have a Canon SLR and was really pelased with it. I've got a friend who's a really keen amateur photographer who has a digital Canon SLR and swears by it; says he prefers it to Nikons.

1. Choose between Canon and Nikon.

Never consider third system, because those two have very wide range of lenses, accessories, servie centers etc. At least you will have a right to participate in "holy war"

2. Decide where are you going to shoot, how often do you use the camera and what budget you can allow to buy lenses and accessories.

a) If you can afford mid-range DSLR such as Canon's EOS XXD series and at least one lens as expensive as camera itself, buy Canon EOS 50D or Nikon D90.

b) If your budget is limited, look for Canon EOS XXXD, but try not to save on at least one lens.

c) If you're not going to be heavy amateur and have no interest in becoming professional or semi-professional photographer, simply buy Nikon D40/D60 or Canon EOS1000D with kit-lens. If you find photography boring your expenses won't be harmful :) (your spent should be ~£300 max)
