I will be visiting London next week and I was wondering what the crime rate is. I am asking because I want to visit a night club while I am there, but I do not have friends to go with.

Hi Allon,

Welcome to The Knowledge!

As with any other large, densely populated city London does suffer from higher than the national average crime rates.

However, the West End and central London aren't considered overly dangerous places for people going out in the evening. It's generally better to go out in a group if you will be going to a night club and leaving in the early hours.

The best advice we can give would be to plan your evening and know where you can get transport home after.

Also, whilst in London you should try and minimise your vulnerability to opportunist criminals by following basic safety guidelines, have a look at the Met Police website here http://www.met.police.uk/crimeprevention/personal.htm

Hope that helps and enjoy your visit to London.

Allon,
You'll be fine if you stay fairly central.
I've never been involved in any trouble on a night out in London. If you stay around the really busy areas of London you'll be fine.

So look to stay around Picaddilly, Leicester Square and then moving up to Soho; there are some great clubs around there I'd recomend POP, Rouge or The Gardening Club in Covent Garden. These have got really good security and the surrounding areas are safe too - even really early in the morning - and you'll be able to get taxis easily from these places.

Don't worry too much. Most major crime takes place within Westminster - in fact within the House of Commons. There are reports of fundamental human rights being pilfered or destroyed - currently we're trying to recover Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Association, Freedom to Protest, Trial by Jury and Freedom from Imprisonment without Trial. In most cases the population hasn't even noticed the theft. I'm personally concerned that Sovereignty itself may go, as there are rumours of an American buyer. I long for the old days when I was only nervous of muggers.

Hello, my name is Ash, and i am a true londoner. I spotted your question and felt i best help out. The only way of describing the crime rate here is by saying it is f*!@ing high! On the other hand, if u are going clubbing, chances are u will go in the city, not the suburbs and its the suburbs that will be the most dangerous at night time in london. Do not be put off cos u will have a great time, just keep yourself to yourself.

Keep your head down, you'll be alright. If you go out lookin for trouble you'll find it. If ya don't ya won't.

If you live in or around London the www.ZubedPI.com gives you up to date crime statistics for when you live or might move to.

This site is soon to cover the whole of the UK and include schools data, etc.

this should help:

Came across an article in the Telegraph saying there was a website called www.zubedpi.com which currently maps all the crime data for London. Apparently it is going to use the same format for show all of UK, and will add things such as mapping all schools with a breakdown of their official key stage reports. There is also going to things such as hospital, GP, dentist data etc.

Worth a look because it could be a really cool site particularly as it grows.
