The Gould Piano Trio has remained at the forefront of the international chamber music scene for a quarter of a century. Its programme features works influenced by tragedy: Shostakovich’s deeply moving Second Piano Trio was written in memory of his friend Sollertinksy as well as the horrors of the Holocaust. Smetana’s emotionally expressive Trio was written as a result of the death of his eldest daughter, and is viewed as a milestone of Romanticism.
