The artist Kimberley Gundle first encountered the Maasai on a charity walk in 2009, along the Great Rift Valley which runs across Kenya and Tanzania. The region was then in drought, with failed crops and dying livestock. She has returned repeatedly in the years since, striving to record a region and a people where failed or unpredictable rains, the demands of education, the onrush of mobile phone culture, are bringing huge pressure to bear on traditional ways of life.

Personal Encounters is a show of bronze sculpture, ceramics and watercolour that fills three rooms at the A&D Gallery. It brings together work from the past decade of Gundle’s practice captivated by the Maasai people - the seminomadic pastoralists of East Africa.

The works celebrate the Maasai culture and tradition that the women embody.

Personal Encounters is on view until 03 November at A&D Gallery, 51 Chiltern Street, London W1U 6LY. Opening hours 10:30 am – 7 pm / Saturday until 6 pm. +44 786 656 2151.
