TOBY DEVESON: THE POWER OF ANALOGUE
Toby Deveson is a black and white photographer. He shoots on Kodak Film, with a Nikkormat camera and the 24mm lens his father gave him on his18th birthday.
Over the last 22 years, as digital photography has eclipsed analogue, Deveson has continued to revel in the magic of the darkroom. His hand-printed photographs, un-cropped and refreshingly gimmick free, rely on disrespectful composition, strong subject matter and broody atmosphere. Over the years, he has travelled the world, capturing precious moments and majestic landscapes.
This powerful exhibition will showcase the best of these striking and memorable works, highlighting the continuing relevance of film photography in a predominantly digital world.
HARNESSING THE POWER OF THE WEB
This purist photographer has no qualms about harnessing the power of the web to engage new online audiences through a dynamic social media campaign, an online competition and a crowd funding campaign to cover some of his exhibition costs.
Deveson comments: “At a time when iconic brands like Kodak face bankruptcy and photography courses at universities no longer have darkrooms, this exhibition will mark the beginning of a personal crusade. We are faced with a potential revival of analogue photography, and I intend to use this show to evangelize about this beautiful medium. I invite audiences to revisit and reclaim the power of film before it’s too late”
Students will be invited to join him on an "Education Day" on the 29th of May.
