Restaurateurs Will Lander and Josie Stead took over historic restaurant The Quality Chop House, restoring it to its former glory, at the end of last year, and are delighted to reveal the One-Off List, an exciting addition to the already extensive wine offering in the Bar, Restaurant and Shop.
The One-Off List comprises a unique selection of special wines sourced from auctions and private collectors. A genuinely exclusive collection, none of the bottles on the One-Off List is available for sale anywhere else in the UK.
The list contains 20 wines from seven different countries, starting at £45. They range from the esoteric (Maurizio Zanella’s rare Lombard ‘Ca’ del Bosco’ red from 1988 in magnum) to the historic (a 1973 Chappelet from California, no longer available anywhere in America, which remains a fresh and vibrant wine from a bygone age of light Californian winemaking). There are also four different Pinot Noirs from Lander’s favourite red wine producer in the world – Calera on the Monterrey Bay coast. These range from 1989 to 1997 – each distinctive and truly exceptional. A 1936 Chateau Sisqueille ‘Rivesaltes’ is currently available by the glass, making this remarkable wine more accessible without the need to splash out on a bottle.
All wines from the main list and the One-Off List are available from the Wine Shop for £10 less than the list price. Ranging from £17 to £250, the full list is a constantly evolving collection that provides excellent value across a range of wines and regions.
The Quality Chop House is a Grade II listed Victorian townhouse comprising a 40-cover Dining Room, Wine Bar, upstairs Private Dining Room and Wine Shop. Built in 1869 as a place for working men to repair to for a hearty lunch, little has changed for this current incarnation. The original wooden pews, themselves listed, remain in the Dining Room, with the oak panelling and Victorian chequered tile flooring lovingly restored to its previous splendour.
Head Chef Shaun Searley’s menus for lunch and dinner and the menu for the Wine Bar are created from the produce delivered daily to the restaurant from trusted suppliers across the UK. A light touch from the kitchen allows the excellent meat, seafood and vegetables to shine at their seasonal best. The Quality Chop House comes into its own at lunch time with a daily-changing ‘Chop and a Glass’ for £15, the a la carte which is served in both the Dining Room and the Wine Bar, and a selection of serious sandwiches is offered to take away for £4.50 each.
At dinner a set menu, priced at £35 per person, offers excellent value showcasing the very best of the day’s produce, sometimes with the additional choice of game birds, rib of beef or whole fish depending on availability. The a la carte menu is available in the Wine Bar with dishes such as Smoked Middle White, green sauce; Red legged partridge, chicken liver parfait, cucumber; Dexter mince, dripping toast; Monkfish, fried brawn, peas, radishes.
Every Monday evening, the Dining Room offers a £30 set menu based around specific seasonal interests. After successfully launching BBQ Mondays through summer, the team are now showcasing the game season over the coming months with Game Night; a menu recently including Game tea, Wild boar terrine, brioche, fig chutney and Crispy partridge legs, blackberries.
Private Dining at The Quality Chop House
The Private Dining Room on the first floor of the townhouse has large sash windows occupying one long wall overlooking the bustling street below. The décor and furnishings remain faithful to the building’s history, with the original fireplace still in situ and an antique table seating up to ten guests. The room is perfect for private dinners and events, as well as wine tastings and business meetings – food and drink is tailored depending on the event and party size, and can range from canapés for a standing reception to a bespoke menu with matching wines.
