Hanwell sits west of Ealing, somewhat in the shadow of its better known neighbour. The A3 expressway was once a favourite site for highwaymen, however today Hanwell is safe, peaceful and has plenty of greenery. In the 18th century numerous coaching inns established themselves along Uxbridge Road to cater to travellers, some of which still exist today as pubs, such as The Viaduct and the Duke of York. The River Brent runs through Hanwell, and the riverside lock has pubs and quaint lock keeper’s cottages as well as providing opportunities to spy the local wildlife. Most locals do their shopping in Ealing, alternatively there are a few stores along Uxbridge Road.
