Newham has long been one of London’s most deprived areas, however as one of the hosting areas for the 2012 London Olympics it has benefited from new employment opportunities and investment, and perhaps more importantly for the long-term, a new sense of optimism. Due to its proximity to the Docklands, Newham suffered much damage during the raids of World War II, leading to the construction of grim post-war tower blocks, one of which collapsed in 1968 causing three deaths. Workers of Asian and Caribbean descent were recruited to help with post-war development; previously Irish, Chinese and African immigrants arrived to work on the docks in the 19th century, making Newham the most ethnically diverse district in the UK.
