Peckham’s already insalubrious reputation has greatly deteriorated in the last decade thanks to widely reported murders and a soar in knife crime. The council is desperately trying to improve the area’s image by knocking down some of the more notorious council estates and erecting new buildings in their place, however it’s going to take more than a few new developments to shatter the deeply rooted gang culture of Peckham. It’s not all doom and gloom however, as the area’s multiethnicity means there is a diverse array of shops and eateries along Rye Lane and the surrounding streets, plus the recent addition of the futuristic Peckham Library has added some architectural pizazz to the area.
