All In London Review
Sleek D&D restaurant with very satisfying food
In September 2012 they unveiled their most ambitious project yet: a complex with two restaurants, Fish Market and New Street Grill, the New Street Wine Shop and the Old Bengal Bar. The location is the Old Bengal Warehouse, once a storage space owned by the East India Company.
During the week the steaks are the main draw at New Street Grill, and the décor certainly nods towards the masculine look of a steakhouse. But it’s Sunday today, and the set lunch menu has retro dishes like vol au vent as well as the obligatory roasts. The fish of the day is a well-cooked fillet of hake with new potatoes and mustardy cabbage, and the slow-braised pork belly is deliciously fatty, with crispy crackling, buttery spring greens and a Yorkshire pudding that takes up half the plate. My northern eating partner voices his approval.
Also good are the smooth, rich Aylesbury country terrine with pickled shallots, the Caesar salad given oomph with crisped up bacon and anchovies marinated in vinegar, and the nostalgia-inducing custard tart filled with wobbly cream, topped with nutmeg, and paired with gooey cinnamon ice cream.
Sunday lunch is just £28.50 for three courses or £30 with unlimited champagne or Bloody Marys, quite a steal given that some of the same dishes cost the best part of £20 on the à la carte. New Street Grill follows the D&D model to the letter, while delivering very satisfying food.
