PizzaExpress Jazz Club

The combination of stodgy pizzas and jazz has been a winning one for the Pizza Express Jazz Club on Dean Street, as they have been packing the crowds in for around 15 years. The intimate Jazz Club appeals to fans as they can sit close to the stage, and the line ups aren’t too shabby either - Diana Krall, Jamie Cullum and Nora Jones played here when stardom was but a twinkle in their eyes. Booking is recommended as it does get filled up due to its small capacity, and ticket prices vary between £15 and £25.

And what of the restaurant? Well, what can be said that you don’t know already of this family-friendly pizza chain. The pizzas are the same as at other branches, there is the Fiorentina with its baked egg in the centre, the Quatre Formaggi with its oily cheese toppings, the newish “leggera” range, in other words low-calorie pizzas where they cut out half the pizza and replace it with salad leaves, prompting you to reach for the dough balls… It’s a cheap option for when you’re starved, and cheese-covered dough can appease the most ravenous of appetites, particularly when sprinkled with mushrooms, asparagus, olives and artichokes like on the Giardiniera – the chewiness of the artichoke leaves notwithstanding. It’s hard to argue when a meal for two is £50, however it’s also interesting that this Soho eatery is still full to the rafters when so many independent, budget options are opening up in the area.
