All In London Review

Stunning riverside location and good value for money stone baked pizzas

Review Image
Kingston riverside is awash with places to eat and most of the venues offer riverside views. But the most recent redevelopment there saw the creation of Lorenzo’s Pizza and we popped in there on Sunday primarily to escape from the rain after shopping.

And we were very impressed. It’s a small, friendly and bright restaurant where the staff are genuinely keen to welcome you. Some diners who were just leaving as we arrived couldn’t stop telling us how marvellous the pizzas were so the staff didn’t need to sell it to us.

The view is astonishing. There’s a big window at the front meaning that just about every table can look over The Thames with Kingston Bridge dominating the view on the right. The tables range from small to large and some are topped with an attractive worn metal finish. There are candles dotted around which must add a romantic hue in the evenings and everyone gets their own designer pizza cutter. The wooden walls make it feel like a cabin in some overseas location – I quite forgot I was in Kingston.

There’s a lovely outside terrace too which I suspect will be buzzing in the warmer weather.

I also liked the music – non-stop Motown hits which heightened our relaxed Sunday vibe.

The menu is limited. There’s a modern stone baking oven and a small, open kitchen where three or four staff are happily cooking away. They may not offer much selection but they clearly focus on what they do best.

Without having to request it, a flask of water and quirky jar glasses were placed on our table on arrival. I ordered a glass of sauvignon blanc which was perfectly chilled and delicious. My companion had a bottle of alcohol free lager which she felt was a little sweet.

I opted for a Margherita with added mushrooms and capers and my companion had the same but with mushrooms and aubergines (the previous diners had highly recommended the aubergines). The pizzas were delightful – crisp and tasty. I added some chilli oil which had just the right amount of bite.

We were so pleased with the food – and that marvellous view – that we decided to have desserts. My companion’s banoffee pie was served in a good sized glass and she declared it “wicked”. I indulged in what is bound to be a firm favourite with the kids – Zini – which are little sticks of pizza dough which you dip into pots of a sticky, rich chocolate sauce or a smoother caramel confection.

While we were there a couple arrived with a tiny baby and a pram. They were welcomed and accommodated quickly and I spied a stack of baby chairs in the corner so the place is obviously a hit with families too.

The total came to £43.65 which included 12.5% service. Compared to what you get at the pizza chains, I thought it was really good value.

It’s an independent restaurant – owned by a local chap from Hampton. I wish him well and hope that this first restaurant flourishes as it would be nice to find them in other locations. As long as they can also offer a fabulous river view.
