All In London Review

Fresh, well-cooked and very flavoursome

Ocaso Tapas Bar in South Wimbledon is a 20 minute walk away from Wimbledon Station or if you don’t fancy walking there, you can also take a train from Wimbledon station to Haydon’s Road Station (one stop) just around the corner from the restaurant. If I'm honest, it's not the nicest area of Wimbledon so I was a bit apprehensive on arrival, but "don't judge a book by it's cover" as they say!

Despite my initial concerns, on arrival I found the restaurant to be clean, spacious and inviting though very quiet. It was a Monday night, so presumably the quietest night of the week, but it would have been nice to have been amongst more of a buzz. I noted the large outside area; an ideal location for private parties and for the smokers around who are after a place to sneak out between courses. The staff were immediately friendly and polite and were very happy to talk us through their menu and to offer tips on drinks selection, demonstrating some real knowledge and experience.

Ocaso has a great selection of authentic Spanish dishes; the tapas are unpretentious, fresh and inexpensive (starting from £3.50 a dish). Despite both myself and my companion being vegetarians we were well-catered for with a variety of hot and cold dishes without meat; the staff were also happy to prepare a lovely vegetarian paella for us. The traditional paella has become Ocaso's signature dish; properly authentic and certainly worth tasting! Non-vegetarians will also find a great selection of seafood, chicken and meat dishes to try.

We thought the tapas as well as the paella were fresh, well-cooked and very flavoursome and they came in very generous servings. If you can manage more after all that, then the desserts sounded great too.

There is a good selection of Spanish wines (starting from £13 per bottle) and spirits as well as delicious cocktails served by an experienced and friendly cocktail waiter.
